Apr/2005 Vets League finds a new champion in new-joiners Yingchaoren

Date: 01/May/2005
I would like to thank all of you once again for being a part of our 2nd monthly "Bangkok Vets League" competition last week. With record-breaking 5 teams competing, it was an enjoyable Sunday afternoon of football in the true spirit of the game. I got very constructive comments from the various players I spoke with during the day. So, we will aim to continue to create more opportunities for the aging football-lovers of Bangkok against their own peers in the coming months.

The participating teams were:
    • Yingcharoen Standbys
    • German
    • British Club
    • Harrow Teachers
    • Scandinavian Vikings

The following were certainly the clear highlights of the day:
  • very friendly, non-competitive casual atmosphere
  • the new "yellow-card-sit-out-the-half" sin-bin rule led to no yellow cards once again
  • fair refereeing
  • the Harrow venue
  • volume of beer (once again, mostly due to the rapid disappearance of many British Club!)

The day seemed like it would go Harrow Teachers's way (with 4 wins and 12 pts in the Group Stage), but it ended in favour of Yingcharoen Thai Vets, who, through a late goal, forced to and won in the penalty-shootout against Harrow Teachers.

Here's the complete scores of the day ==>

This is only its 2nd month, but some patterns already emerging:
  • first Thai team participated, and won!
  • all teacher teams are a formidable force to reckon with
  • Germans secured their 3rd spot as a result of a fabulous penalty taken against the Vikings by a lady player
  • Vikings can't believe they lost to the Germans in both months!
  • British Club continuing their consistency, pulling the rear in both months!

I also got further comments from different teams during the day, some of which will be implemented in future months:
  • start a bit earlier to allow time for more beers!
  • maybe make it a whole-day family event with BBQ organized by Harrow School
  • consider Patana School venue
    • has better pitches
    • has more pitches
    • has better rain+flood drainage (a factor during summer months)
    • has shops with food/drinks/water
  • ball-boys were missed.!

I am very happy to see that Vikings, Germans and the British Club are regularly supporting the Vets League. As I mentioned, if there is continued demand with regularly participating teams, we could do it more often during the summer period (say, every 4-5 weeks). Only demand will tell..!

At the moment, the next monthly competition is planned to be on Jun/19th (Sunday) — that's about 7-8 weeks of break again to wait for the Casual League to come the conclusion of its 2004-2005 season. Please also let me know if there are other events scheduled for the Jun/19th date.

Thanks, once again, for supporting the idea that was originally floated by Chris Jolly. Bruce and I hope we can continue and sustain it going forward. Please also do contact me back if there are other suggestions or ideas that could improve the event in future months.

Looking forward to welcoming you back for the same kick-around on Jun/19th afternoon.

Kind regards,
