Bangkok Veterans League

Hot off the Press:

Bangkok Veterans League

──── Bangkok, Thailand ────

Welcome to the official website of the Bangkok Veterans League. This is a community of football-hungry but very-slow and fast-aging Over-35 youngsters, from all corners of the world and all walks of life, played in the true spirit of friendship and the love of the game.

Following years of running the ball in the Farang League and the Casual League, some of us thought it was not really possible to keep up with the young-blood filling up the ranks of the newly emerging teams, and so the result is this new  “Vets League” in Bangkok, specifically welcoming those of us who are looking for the lighter side of the game among peers (who don't run circles around us!).

It must be stressed, some of these so-called “Vets” are still in their prime, and could easily take on any challenge posed by any wannabe young-blood team in either of the leagues mentioned above.

Originally floated by Chris Jolly during the friendly games back at the end of 2003 at the International School of Bangkok (ISB), and a key exploratory meeting among Bruce-D, Eralp, Martin-C, Jesper at the British Club on 08/Jul/2004, plus much intense debate and discussion during the rest of 2004, the Veterans League got its inaugural kickoff back in Feb/2005 with 4 visionary “Founding Fathers”:
    ■ German Allstars (led by Eralp, Bruce-D, Ralf-K)
    ■ British Club (led by Martin-C, and Chris-J remotely!)
    ■ Scandinavian Vikings (led by Jesper, and later by Niclas)
    ■ NIST Teachers (led by Adrian-W)
and continues to increase its roster of teams to this date. Nowadays, we are routinely getting 6-12 teams in each one of our monthly competitions, and having a ball while doing it!

Our philosophy is friendship, fellowship, fairness, and fun, where winning is not the objective. Each team prides itself with being friendly and fair, in the true “Land of Smiles” spirit of “Amazing Thailand”. We would like to see each team and every player leave at the end of the day with a positive impression of the half-day meet-up, having made some new friends in the players from other teams, and anxious and eager to return to play in the following month.

And, to that end, we keep it simple:
    ■ Timing & Format:
♦ 1st Sundays of every month (usually)
        ♦ half-day during 2pm-6pm
        ♦ minimum 4-5 teams

So, what are you waiting for? Come, join the fun, and enjoy a day out with real dedicated football buffs.

And, if you are a travelling team just passing by Bangkok, we would be delighted to make up a mix-team to catch a friendly game. We get the pitch, you get the beer — simple enough

Hope to see you at the next Vets tournament.

Remember, if it's 1st Sunday, it's Vets day.!

Kind regards,
-Eralp

Season #18, Month #5 — Bangkok Condo Rentals trade their BadCup for a Championship

Date: 08/May/2022

The normal service resumed at the Vets League, getting back upto 10 teams again at the May/2022 competition.

The usual suspects — Scandinavian Vikings, German Allstars, BU Japan, Japan FC, Toto’s Titans, Japan Allstars, Bangkok Condo Rentals, Bangkok Oldboys — were all present. We had a returning team in the mix — Prachauthit United — back from a long absence since Sep/2020. And, to top them all up, the ever-filler-uppers — Team-X Volunteers — were also present with strong numbers.

Season #18, Month #4 — Perseverance brings championship to Bangkok Oldboys after more than 2 years

Date: 03/Apr/2022

Most likely due to the long Songkran holidays in the month of April every year, we had a reduced number of teams joining the Vets League this month. Nevertheless, that won’t deter us from playing, as long as there are 3-or-more teams willing to get together!

Season #18, Month #3 — Scandinavian Vikings repeat their Championship

Date: 06/Mar/2022

Vets League returned to SoccerPro Onnut with an 8-team competition this month. Scandinavian Vikings, were present to defend their title from last month, plus the usual suspects — German Allstars, BU Japan, Toto’s Titans, Japan FC, Bangkok Condo Rentals. We also had a new addition to the Vets League ranks in Kh. Putari’s Kick Company.

Season #18, Month #2 — Scandinavian Vikings topple Bangkok Oldboys on the sudden death penalty shootout

Date: 13/Feb/2022

The 2nd monthly competition of the 2022 Vets League is over-and-done-with, and we have a new monthly Champions!

With German Allstars and Bangkok Condo Rentals out for holidays this month, and welcoming back Scandinavian Vikings first time since Nov/2021, there was certainly a change in the balance of power.

Season #18, Month #1 — Bangkok Condo Rentals clench the Jan/2022 Vets League championship in an entertaining Grand Final

Date: 23/Jan/2022

After playing at SoccerPro Bangna in December, we gave it a try at SoccerPro Onnut this month. Without going into nitty-gritty details, it seems that both spots are suitable for Vets League format, and we can pick-&-choose either venue in future months, depending on availability.

Season #6, Event #8 — Muubaan Kumar steal the game in another close encounter

Date: 04/Jul/2011

This was the “first-ever” out-of-Bangkok trip for Vets League back in 2009, and we were able to repeat it this year again, making the trip to nearby Chonburi, visiting authoritative Referee Kumar's village, and playing against his Muubaan Kumar village elders.

Season #5, Event #23 — Francophones win on a last-gasp last-kick effort

Date: 29/Nov/2009

It is November, therefore it must be time for Bangkok Veterans's annual traditional friendly with the Bangkok Francophones. Visions of last year's agonizing lost still fresh in the memories, Bangkok Veterans arrived to this year's friendly with a lot of enthusiasm and a strong 20-men squad.

A quick e-mail went out to all the Vets on the VetsLeague mailing group, and we had another talented squad in a flash once again.

Season #5, Event #20 — THAIcrew-45 lift both Over-35s and Over-45s Veterans World Cup

Date: 15/Nov/2009

Such a whirlwind tournament that it was the 2nd annual Veterans World Cup, and, after many games, goals, rains, mudpuddles, penalties-shootouts, and even coin tosses, this year's World Cup championship go to, would you believe it, an Over-45 team ==> THAIcrew-45 !!!

At their advancing age, they played the tournament strategically and according to the rules, took advantage of them any way they can, and found themselves against last year's Runners-up, Scandinavian Vikings, in the Grand Final.

Season #5, Event #16 — Visiting Sunbelt United snatch the Top Trophy away from the local teams

Date: 12/Sep/2009

AThis was just an idea — an idea that got kicked around for years. At the end, it finally came true, holding Bangkok’s monthly Vets League somewhere outside of Bangkok.

We were successful in holding the “first-ever” non-Bangkok edition of the Vets League on the Eastern Seaboard, in Pataya — albeit, an annual one!

Season #5, Event #14 — Japanese take back the Permanent Cup with Ninja-like precision

Date: 23/Aug/2009

After exactly a year later, the Bangkok Veterans met the Bangkok Japanese (a mix team of stars from BU Japan, Japan FC and Japan Allstars) once again with the aim to bring home this annual traditional friendly derby's Permanent Cup.

In the past 2 years, the Permanent Cup had changed hands back-&-forth, and the winner of this year would gain an upper hand in the rankings.

A quick e-mail went out to all the Vets on the VetsLeague mailing group, and in a flash, we had a team.

Season #4, Event #19 — Thailand Seniors cruise to another lopsided victory

Date: 01/Nov/2008

At the risk of another rain cancellation, Bangkok Veterans returned to the beautiful grounds of Phasakan Sports to take on the indomitable Thailand Seniors in their annual traditional friendly.

Fresh off from their 2nd championship in 3 years in the 3rd annual Seniors World Cup in Pitsanulok in Apr/2008, the Veterans knew it was going to be an uphill battle against the Thailand Seniors right from the get-go.

A quick e-mail went out to all the Vets on the VetsLeague mailing group, and we had another talented squad in a flash once again:
