Perseverance brings championship to Bangkok Oldboys after more than 2 years
Report Date: 05/May/2022
Most likely due to the long Songkran holidays in the month of April every year, we had a reduced number of teams joining the Vets League this month. Nevertheless, that won’t deter us from playing, as long as there are 3-or-more teams willing to get together!
This month’s competition brought together the “hard core” Vets teams — Scandinavian Vikings, BU Japan, Japan FC, Toto’s Titans, Bangkok Oldboys, and all had a strong squads on the day.
The Group Stage games were challenging. With the exception of Scandinavian Vikings beating BU Japan 4-0, amazingly, all other games ended 0-0 or 1-0 or 1-1.
When the dust settled, with 8 points, Scandinavian Vikings took the top spot, demonstrating why they were the Defending Champions. Having beaten the Vikings, Japan FC was deservedly in the 2nd place, with 8 points as well, on less goals scored. Bangkok Oldboys and Toto’s Titans took the 3rd and 4th places, with 4 points each. Bringing up the rear was BU Japan with 2 points.
That meant that the fortune of playing the Playoff Match fell onto the shoulders of Toto’s Titans and BU Japan. No matter what, Toto’s Titans had the deep squad to come out victorious, with an easy 3-0 win, handing over the BadCup trophy to BU Japan.
Semi-finals were an exciting affair. Scandinavian Vikings leaving it to penalty shootouts to win over Toto’s Titans, and Bangkok Oldboys taking no prisoners with a 7-0 triumph over Japan FC.
In an entertaining 3rd place match, Toto’s Titans edged out Japan FC with a 3-2 win, on a last minute kick.
The Grand Final was a repeat of Feb/2022 tournament, and just like in February, this month also going to the dreaded penalty shootout. However, due to having extra time, the Captains opts for 5-each penalties, instead of sudden death in February, and that may have benefitted Bangkok Oldboys this time, convincingly placing 4 shots in, as opposed only 2 from Vikings. Ironically, Johan may have spoke prematurely, thinking how long has it been in the Vets League since a team won a 3-in-a-row monthly championship? (Answer: Very long 😘).
Congratulations!, especially to Jimmy and the Bangkok Oldboys, as they have been in the hunt for this championship since their “B Team — Stickboys”’s victory 2 years ago in Feb/2020. Better yet, some say that the new black kit had something to do with it 😁
Overall, another enjoyable Sunday afternoon football among the Vets.
See y’all soon on May/8th.
Kind regards,
-Eralp
